Verdant - Rules Summary
In Verdant, players collect plants, room cards, pets and furniture to set up their home to be the coziest, most verdant and to score the most points!
Players draft cards and tokens to build out a 3X5 grid of cards alternating between plant cards which need to gain verdancy, and room cards where they can place furniture and pets to score points!
Each turn, players select a token/card pair to draft, add the card to their tableau, and use the token (see below). Players begin with a random plant and room card, and will draft 13 more cards. The game ends when everyone has completed their grid.
These are the ways to score points:
1. Complete Plants
Plants have a type, light requirements, verdancy requirement, and number of points they score if completed.
When placed into the grid the primary goal is to get the plant the verdancy it needs to be completed. Earning verdancy is tracked on the plant cards with verdancy tokens - the light colored ones represent 1 verdancy and the darker ones represent 3 verdancy. Plants can gain verdancy by:
Making one of the three different light requirement matches (low light, medium light, bright light) between a plant card and a room card. This can be made when placing a room card, or when placing a plant card. Each time a match is made, verdancy is added to the plant.
Using Nurture tokens gained in the draft. The bag of fertilizer allows a player to add three verdancy to one single plant, the hand trowel allows a player to add one verdancy to up to three different plants, and the water can allows a player to add verdancy to all plants surrounding a chosen room.
Using green thumbs, (see below).
Once a plant is completed a pot will be added! Pots are worth a different number of victory points (1, 2, 3 points), depending on how early they are achieved, so the faster a player completes plants, the more bonuses they will get.
Once a plant is potted, it will longer gain verdancy.
If a player does not finish a plant, the verdancy on incomplete plants will score one point for every two verdancy.
2. Rooms and items
In addition to providing light to plants, each room also has a wallpaper type that matches one of the plant types. Each room card will score 1 point for each plant of the matching type (up to 4 points). Additionally, if a player adds a token (furnishing or animal) with the same wallpaper type on it onto the room card, it doubles the number of points that room will score for each adjacent plant (up to 8 points, if all adjacent plants match the room with a matching cat or sofa, etc)!
The furnishings and pets not only add to the room scoring but also score as sets of unique items.
Note that with all tokens drafted, they must be placed/used when drafted, but players have a single item storage spot that allows them to save one token for a future turn.
There are two final ways to score points - the collector and decorator bonuses! At the end of the game if players have one of each of the plant types and/or room types in their grid, they will score 3 points.
How green thumbs work:
A green thumb will be placed onto the card in the market that is not chosen in the column that was drafted from. When a player takes a card with a green thumb, they earn that thumb.
Green thumbs can be spent in three different ways. Players spend 2 green thumbs to do an action.
To wipe tokens from the market. Players will select the ones they wish to wipe
Break the rules of drafting adjacent cards/tokens and choose any card and any token.
To add a single verdancy to any plant!
Players can do as many thumb actions as they want on their turn, but may only end their turn with 5 thumbs. If a player has more than 5, they will be discarded.
